Surabaya
The city of Surabaya is the capital of East Java Province which is the center of government and economy as well as the largest city in the province. Surabaya is also a city located in East Java Province, Indonesia. Surabaya is the second largest city in Indonesia after the city of Jakarta. This city is located 800 km east of Jakarta, or 435 km northwest of Denpasar, Bali. This city is located on the north coast of the eastern part of Java Island, facing the Madura Strait and the Java Sea.
Architecture in the city of Surabaya is a mixture of colonial, Asian, Javanese, modern and post-modern influences. In Surabaya itself, you can often find colonial era buildings that still stand strong today, such as the Majapahit Hotel (formerly Hotel Oranje) and the Surabaya Post Office. As a relatively old city in Indonesia and Southeast Asia, most of the colonial buildings in Surabaya were built around the 17th to early 20th centuries. These buildings show the Dutch / European style of the Middle Ages.
An example of a colonial era building that is well known in Surabaya is De Simpangsche SociÑteit or what is usually called the "Youth Hall Building" which was built in 1907 with an eclectic architectural style, namely by combining neoclassical architecture, gothic architecture and renaissance architecture designed by architects. Dutch citizen Westmaes and functions as a recreation building for Dutch expatriate residents in Surabaya.
